PARK it and don’t get taken for a ride.
A dealership is built to control the conversation. This four-step formula – PARK – puts the control back where it belongs — with you — before you ever sign anything.
- Pre-approve your financing
- Assess it with a mechanic
- Refuse to bundle it
- Keep your walk-away power
Pre-approve your financing
Get a loan offer from your own bank or credit union before you shop. Now you know your real, total number — and the dealer can’t set it for you. If their financing beats it, great. If not, you already have a fallback in hand.
Assess it with a mechanic
Before committing to any used vehicle, pay a trusted independent mechanic — not the dealer’s shop — for a prepurchase inspection. It costs far less than one bad repair bill, and it can change your negotiating position entirely.
Refuse to bundle it
Price, trade-in, interest rate, and add-ons (GAP, warranties, service plans) are four separate negotiations, not one. A single “monthly payment” number hides where the dealer makes money back. Ask for each in writing, separately.
Keep your walk-away power
Line up more than one option before you go in — including dealers outside your immediate area, even ones you won’t drive to. A phone call for a competing quote is free leverage. The moment a deal feels like your only option, you’ve lost it.
