History

Appalachian Opportunity Fund began as a community-based initiative incubated within a $230 million financial institution serving Central Appalachia from 2014 to 2018. During this period, the program helped families across the region access affordable capital and build long-term financial stability—demonstrating both impact and demand.

In 2019, the initiative spun off as an independent nonprofit, led by former credit union staff who brought deep institutional knowledge and strong community relationships.

Today, Appalachian Opportunity Fund is uniquely positioned to support families in Central Appalachia by combining trusted financial expertise with a mission-driven, community-rooted approach.
